Frequently Asked Questions
How are students selected?
Students are selected through a competitive application process. The application includes both written essays and a video essay question that assesses an applicant's background, interests, academic qualifications, leadership potential, and personal/professional goals. After a careful review of the applications, the program director and the two academic co-directors will compare notes and work together to build a cohort of ~80 students whose aptitude, interests, availability, and career aspirations align with the T&M program's mission and goals. How much additional work is involved?
The minor requires 22 credit hours, with coursework comparable in difficulty to standard junior/senior business or engineering classes. The capstone alone accounts for 4 credits and demands significant effort in the final semester.Elective credits for T&M courses?
This varies by department. Students should consult their academic advisor for specifics.
Will participation delay graduation?
It can, depending on AP credits and your schedule. About 80–90% of students complete both their major and the minor in four years; others may opt for summer or winter courses or extend to a ninth semester. A detailed academic plan is required as part of the application. Can I take T&M courses without being in the program?
No—most courses (except MSE 101) are reserved for admitted T&M students only.
Are graduate students eligible?
No. The T&M minor is exclusively for undergraduates. Graduate students should explore the separate Master’s in Technology Management program.
What majors are eligible to apply?
Students from the following majors are eligible to apply:
- Gies College of Business (all majors)
- The Grainger College of Engineering (all majors)
- College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (Agricultural and Biological Engineering majors only)
- College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (Chemical Engineering majors only)
Is my CS+X or X+DS major eligible?
If the "X" in CS+X or X+DS is eligible as a stand-alone major, then the + major also is eligible. At this time, only the following + majors are eligible.
- Computer Science + Bioengineering
- Computer Science + Physics
- Business + Data Science
- Finance + Data Science
- Accountancy + Data Science
