William Ocasio joined Gies College of Business in 2020. Prior to that he had spent 25 years at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, where he taught in their PhD, MBA, and executive programs.

He is an internationally renowned, award-winning organizational theorist and business strategy scholar. He is well-known for his interdisciplinary approach to strategic organizational research and education. He has an unparalleled reputation as a pioneering theoretical thinker who can translate his scholarly work to make it accessible to leaders of global corporations. His award-winning book, The Institutional Logics Perspective: A New Approach to Culture, Structure, and Process (co-authored with Patricia H. Thornton and Michael Lounsbury) is the most cited work in the field.

At Illinois, William also serves as the director of the Illinois Strategic Organizations Initiative (ISOI). ISOI addresses unmet demand by academic communities and corporations for interdisciplinary research in strategic organizational design and management. ISOI’s mission is to conduct, sponsor, and promote world-class research and thought leadership in strategic organizations, which build upon Gies College of Business’ distinguished history and reputation in both organizational behavior and strategy.

William received his bachelor’s degree in economics from the Universidad de Puerto Rico at Mayaguez in 1976, his MBA from Harvard University in 1984, and his PhD in organizational behavior from Stanford University in 1992.
